Employment background checks are an important process of looking up official and commercial records of a person. This is a process normally followed when someone applies for a job that requires high security, like in a bank, financial institutions, schools and colleges. Earlier the process of checking up was done by the policemen but nowadays it is professionally handled by HR firms which specialize in selecting the right candidate for the job.

Employment background checks need to be done when someone is applying for a job. The standard elements of background checks involves checks on previous employment, education, organization affiliations, local agencies where the candidate has lived, worked or gone to school. There could be interviews with the people who know the individual.

Employment background checks may be expanded as necessary to resolve issues and to address employment standards unique to the nature of individual agencies. Checks on the candidate and spouse or cohabitant can be made through policemen. Whether you are hired or promoted for a job may depend on the information revealed in the background checks. Sometimes job applicants as well as existing employees may be asked to submit to background checks. Certain jobs also need screening which is mandatory by the law of the land. Considering several threats by terrorists and extremists it is but natural for the dramatically increased number of Employment background checks being conducted.

However, there are certain drawbacks in the background checks being conducted. Sometimes, it could lead to a lot of embarrassment especially when the background checks are being made. These checks could include interviews with neighbors, friends and associates. This could lead to some amount of embarrassment and criticism because of the nature of question being asked. In certain countries employment background checks are not legally allowed and would require the job applicant to sign a consent form to allow a background check to be conducted. However, this puts any job seeker in an awkward position, since refusing to sign would jeopardize the chances of getting the job.

Employment background checks need not be all that embarrassing, especially during interviews with friends and neighbors, if the candidate can inform them, in advance. Forewarning them will also speed up the process and help the candidate get the job faster. Since these employment checks involve your personal data, one can also request a copy of the same for self evaluation. Some governments also see to it that it is made mandatory. In the United States of America, the Federal Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA) sets national standards for employment screening. However, the law only applies to background checks being done by an outside agency or a consumer reporting agency.

Although these laws prevent an employer from considering certain information, there is no way an applicant can determine whether such information will be revealed in a background check. However, FCRA does not prohibit any employer from asking such questions in the application.
