Pre Employment Background Checks

Do You Really Need Pre Employment Background Checks?

For a person who has carried out quite a few pre employment background checks in the past, this is not something new. However, if you are the kind of person who feels that the privacy of a person is at stake, when you do a background check, you are never going to be comfortable with the whole process.

Most of time people keep wondering if pre employment background checks are really necessary. If there are skeletons in the cupboards of those we employ, we probably would never have thought of employing them in the first place. In some cases however, these checks actually throw up some information that is new to the potential employee himself. For instance, a couple of years ago, a routine background check was done on a person who had applied for a job in a security agency. The employer found that the person had two cases of drunken driving registered against him. This would not have been strange, if the person had described himself as a teetotaler. This is where the employer thought something had gone wrong.

In this case, it was good that pre employment background checks like these were carried out. The person in question realized that somebody else had implicated him in a crime that he never even committed. The point to be noted here is whether this wrong could ever be righted. Of course, it can be; according to the law, the person who is so implicated can always send in a petition to the court of law asking for an inquiry to be done. There is no doubt that this is a nuisance and has to be dealt with at some time. It is however, certainly better than finding out about this when a bank is trying to do a vetting of your past, when you have applied for a loan.

All pre employment background checks are carried out by agencies that have access to the records maintained either by the police or by the court. With suitable licenses, they can access records that are maintained either by the state or by the county. In case of certain offences that are recorded, agencies could also approach the Interpol or the FBI for clarifications when they are in doubt.

While carrying out pre employment background checks, it is necessary and in fact mandatory, to inform the person concerned that he needs to be totally upfront about the details of his past records. If he has anything to declare regarding some crimes that he might have committed, it would help his future employers look at him rather differently. They would be pleased that someone is being honest about their antecedents. In spite of all these facilities that are available to all employers, there are many cases where they do get fooled by people who want to get into their employ. In such cases, the long arm of the law will catch up with them sooner or later.
